More than a century ago in 1904, a Wanganui teacher returned from a trip to China with some very special black seeds. Horticulturist, Alexander Allison sprouted those seeds and in doing so, started the beginnings of growing kiwifruit in New Zealand. Over 100 years on and Aotearoa’s kiwifruit industry is strong, with over 2700 growers around the country represented by Zespri. Each year, Zespri invests over $7 million in innovation. A big part of that investment goes towards increasing orchard productivity. We caught up with Zespri’s Innovation Leader and one of Zespri’s growers to find out more about how innovation is playing a part in this iconic horticultural industry…
